This proof gold three coin set is from the Citius Gold Series and forms part of the Olympic coin programme of the London 2012 Games. The set consists of a one ounce coin and two quarter ounce coins. There are 9 designs inspired by the official motto of the Olympic Games: Citius, Altius, Fortius meaning Faster, Higher, Stronger. The one ounce coin features God of the Sea, Neptune, who is representing Sailing. The design will relate Neptune and athletes who aim for mastery over water. The quarter ounce coins feature Mercury and Diana. Mercury was athletic and was always looking out for runners and helping injured athletes. This design focuses on a runner and represents the strong association between him and the modern day athlete. Diana, goddess of hunting, often roamed mountain forests in search of her prey with a bow and arrow. Diana features with cyclists, who hunt and chase down their reward, who do not stop until they get to the finish line. The obverse of the coins feature Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Each coin comes in a plastic capsule, along with original Royal Mint boxes and combined certificate of authenticity and informative booklet.
