Historically, Germany’s gold coin production is vast and fragmented. Up until the unification of Germany, many of the states had their own mints and issued their own coins. It is from this that we have wealth of different German gold coins, each depicting its own rich local history of the state. Typically many of the coins follow a similar standard such as the gold Ducat, Krone or Thaler. It wasn’t until unification in 1871 and the subsequent money reforms of the late 1870’s that we see the more familiar gold 5, 10 and 20 Marks minted.
