1911-1932 George V Sovereign

The George V Sovereign was minted by the Royal Mint from 1911-1932. George V reigned during a turbulent era for the Royal family and Great Britain. It is for this reason that the production of the George V sovereigns was sporadic and does not span the duration of his reign, unlike his predecessors. These coins display a portrait of George V and on the reverse Benedetto Pistrucci's design of St. George and the Dragon. George V is remembered for changing the British Royal House from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to Windsor in 1917. H.G Wells notoriously wrote about the Royals' Germanic connection, stating it as an "alien and uninspiring court", George V famously replied: "I may be uninspiring, but I'll be damned if I'm alien!".

Austrian 1 Ducat

This 1 Ducat coin is produced by the Viennese Mint in Austria. A particularly interesting detail about this coin is that the carat of the gold is much higher than other European gold coins. They are produced in 23.6 carat (a fineness of 0.986). Ducat coins have been issued in Austria since at least 1612. The last regular issue of Ducats was in 1914, and all the 1 Ducats dated 1915 are restrikes. One Ducat coins dated 1915 are still being produced by the Austrian Mint today. The design shows the laureate head of Emperor Franz Joseph I on the obverse and an image of the crowned imperial eagle on the reverse. Victoria Young Head Sovereign with Shield reverse

The Sovereign was first chartered by Henry VII in 1489 - its original design showed the King in full coronation regalia and on the reverse, the Tudor Rose, a reference to the union between the houses of Lancaster and York. The Victoria Young Head Sovereign was produced between 1838 and 1887. An interesting fact about the Young Head coins - they are the only Sovereign to run concurrently with two differing designs on the reverse. Both the coins have a portrait of the young Victoria, however from 1838 to 1887 the design on the obverse displayed a heraldic shield. From 1871 to 1887 the Royal Mint revived a Benedetto Pistrucci's earlier design of St. George and the Dragon. These coins benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) Free.
