Best Price One Ounce Gold Coin Britannia 22ct (1987-2012) - CGT Free

Britannia one ounce gold coins are issued by the Royal Mint and have a face value of £100. The first Britannia was minted in 1987. In 2013 the Royal Mint decided to produce the 1oz gold Britannia in 24 carat, as opposed to 22 carat. The actual gold content remains the same however. ATS Bullion, London's West End bullion dealer, is an authorised dealer of gold and silver Britannia coins. These coins also benefit from being Capital Gains Tax (CGT) free. 1887-1893 Victoria Jubilee Head Sovereign

The Sovereign was first chartered by Henry VII in 1489. Its original design showed the King in full coronation regalia and on the reverse, the Tudor Rose, a reference to the union between the houses of Lancaster and York. The Victoria Jubilee Head was produced between 1887 and 1893 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. As part of the celebrations, the Royal Mint revived Benedetto Pistrucci's earlier design of St. George and the Dragon. The St. George design did not grace the half Sovereign until 1893.

This Sovereign was produced by the Royal Mint in 2013. The coin features a portrait of an older Queen Elizabeth II, the fourth separate depiction of Her Majesty. The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci's design of St. George and the Dragon.

1911-1932 George V Sovereign

The George V Sovereign was minted by the Royal Mint from 1911-1932. George V reigned during a turbulent era for the Royal family and Great Britain. He reigned throughout World War I and during the Great Depression. It is for this reason that the production of the George V sovereigns was sporadic and does not span the duration of his reign, unlike his predecessors. These coins display a portrait of George V and on the reverse Benedetto Pistrucci's design of St. George and the Dragon. George V is remembered for changing the British Royal House from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to Windsor in 1917. H.G Wells notoriously wrote about the Royals' Germanic connection, stating it as an "alien and uninspiring court", George V famously replied: "I may be uninspiring, but I'll be damned if I'm alien!".

1893-1901 Victoria Old Head Sovereign

The Victoria Old Head Sovereign was produced between 1893 and her death in 1901. The Old Head coins were designed by Thomas Brock. These coins officially displayed a later portrait of Queen Victoria and on the reverse, removed the previous design of the shield and adopted Benedetto Pistrucci's earlier design of St. George and the Dragon, which is still in use today.

1902-1910 Edward VII Sovereign

These gold Sovereigns display the portrait of King Edward VII and on the reverse, Benedetto Pistrucci's design of St. George and the Dragon. King Edward ruled for only a short time, just eight years. He was the first monarch that embraced the idea of Royal public appearances and was noted by J.B. Priestly as being "the King England has known since the earlier 1660s". He was also colloquially known as the "peacemaker".

1957-1968 Queen Elizabeth II Pre-decimal Sovereign

The Elizabeth II pre-decimal Sovereign was minted between the years of 1957 and 1968. The coins feature a portrait of the young Queen, aged just 26 at her accession. The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci's design of St. George and the Dragon.

1974-1982 Queen Elizabeth II Decimal Sovereign

The Elizabeth II Decimal Sovereign was minted between the years of 1974 and 1982. The coins features the second likeness of the Queen to have appeared on a Sovereign. The latest release of Sovereign has a change of design to celebrate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. 70 years on from her accession to the throne in 1952, the Royal Mint have issued a Royal Coat of Arms design instead of the classic St. George and Dragon design which features on the majority of sovereigns. Previous “limited edition” designs of the classic Sovereign have been particularly sought after, and the 2022 is expected to follow suit. This portrait shows a mature Elizabeth II, with her hair worn in a different style from the earlier sovereign. On the reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci's design of St. George and the Dragon.
