The 1989 Gold Proof Sovereign was minted to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the first sovereign, minted in 1489 for Henry VII. The coin features a picture of his majesty King Henry VII, on a throne with his Royal Sceptre. On the obverse is the Tudor Rose with the heraldic arms in the centre.
The 1989 Sovereign was only minted as a proof finish as is the case from all sovereigns from 1983-1999. These individual coins had a maximum mintage of only 12,500 and therefore are very popular with collectors and investors alike.
